Back to Reality ( kind of)

The lingering smell of beer and alfresco fun has finally left my nostrils and been replaced with the humdrum smell of reality, which I must admit, is somewhat cleaner. After a weekend spent in muddy fields at Latitude festival Me and Cheg returned home from East Anglia (aka The hardest place to get to in the world ever) on a journey involving pretty much every vehicle known to man besides a hovercraft. The 5 hours sat next to a fervent feminist with impressively loud crisp-eating skills on the megabus were oh so worth it though. Friday evening was spent with Connor Oberst 3 inches from my face. YES THREE  INCHES FROM MY FACE. (that exact sentence has been said by me approximately 372 times since the moment when Connor Oberst ceased to be three inches from face, and probably even once when he actually was there...three inches from my face). The hands that penned the angsty anthems of my mid-teens stood sweaty and pale before me for one beautiful minute, before he headed back up on stage to invite Jenny Lewis and Jonathan Rice up there with him. Thus causing us to deafen every man, woman, child and squirrel within a two mile radius with our excited squeals of adoration. Later that night Jenny and Johnny performed a more intimate set in the woods and we firmly established ourselves as devoted fans/potential stalkers. The sky decided to hurl a fair amount of rain on us on Saturday afternoon but we survived by donning plastic ponchos and eating hot things that smelt like comfort. That evening saw Paulo Nutini take to the stage, with us right at the front, screaming (and meaning) the lyrics 'however much you use me baby, come on use me more' to his freshly tanned face. Sunday involved a creepy choir, the Tennessee twangs of Caitlin Rose, a mind blowing performance by Lykke Li and an even greater one by Eels. It also probably involved pizza and the sentence 'Connor Oberst was three inches from my face!'. Despite the weather and the wellies it was such a good weekend with amazing performances from some of my favourite bands. Latitude is the prettiest festival I've ever been to, with a river full of illuminated lilies and a woodland strung with lights it was kind of like the festival of my pixie pipe dreams, where psychedelic forest dwellers came together and danced with stars in their eyes and folk music in their ears. Of course it was also the festival of yummy mummies and kids named Phedre sat around eating organic halloumi wraps in their fairtrade T-shirts...but who doesn't love a bit of grilled cheese when it's going anyway?!
Here are some pictures I stole from Latitudes website, and an old video of Jenny and Johnny performing 'end of the affair'. It was the last song on their set list and it transformed us all into zombies with dropped jaws, melting hearts and very happy ears.

Also, did I mention that last Friday Connor Oberst was three inches from my face?!
